Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) stems from Taoist philosophy, which emphasizes living in harmony with nature and being in the present. This traditional, holistic practice integrates the use of acupuncture, herbology, food therapy and therapeutic exercises, such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and meditation. At ALIVE, our aim is to help you achieve balance physically, mentally and emotionally by maintaining harmonious circulation of the Vital Essence (Qi), throughout the energetic pathways, or meridians of the body. We strive to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western medicine and treats your overall well-being.

Through TCM, we believe that physical and emotional challenges are associated with the imbalance or blockage of free flowing vital energy along your body’s energetic pathway known as meridians. This is also known as qi (pronounced “Chee”). Acupuncture helps to resolve blocked qi flow and stimulate the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. By inserting fine thin sterile needles into different points along the body, acupuncture restores balance throughout the mind, body, soul, and spirit.

What type of needles is being used?

Hypodermic needles administered for vaccinations are very different to acupuncture needles. Hypodermic needles are thick and hollow since they must remove or inject fluid. Whereas acupuncture needles are thin, solid and not designed to be inserted deeply into the skin. We always use sterilized, one-use disposable, surgical-grade stainless steel needles.

Acupuncture needles are of a very thin; usually 0.14 mm to 0.30 mm in diameter and are inserted no more than 15 mm to 25 mm into the body. These needles come in a pre-sterilized sealed package and are discarded after the first use.

How Can I Overcome My Fear Of Needles

Many people with a fear of needles successfully obtain acupuncture treatments. There are ways to work around needle phobias, such as shortening the length of treatment slightly and breathing exercises. Having an open discussion about your fear will make it possible for you to overcome it, and enjoy the benefits of acupuncture. We are very understanding about the misconception that needles equal pain and will work with you to obtain positive results with acupuncture. If you have questions regarding this, please contact us by phone or email to discuss it further.

Does It Hurt?

Most people do not find acupuncture painful, as the needles are very thin. Many describe it as relaxing and fall asleep during treatment. People experience acupuncture needling differently. Most patients feel only minimal pain as the needles are inserted; most feel no pain at all. Any discomfort is usually minimal and brief. After the needle is inserted you may feel various sensations ranging from: a vague numbness, heaviness, dull ache, slight tingling or nothing at all. These feelings are all desirable and normal.

Will You Work With My Doctor?

Acupuncture can help people who have not been successfully treated using conventional western medicine. With your consent, we will share information regarding your care with your doctor or health professionals.

Acupuncture and Fertility

Acupuncture carries enormous medical benefits and is capable of providing you with a renewed sense of hope. It may help to restore your ability to conceive naturally, regulate your menstrual cycle, and minimize the side effects associated with hormonal drugs. Acupuncture creates a supportive positive fertile environment that allows your fetus to thrive and prosper naturally. This therapeutic treatment option has become increasingly popular and works hand-in-hand with modern fertility treatments, such as Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

Acupuncture is a great drug-free way to provide relief from many of the discomforts associated with pregnancy, such as nausea, severe vomiting, fatigue, anxiety, stress, insomnia, bleeding, heartburn, hemorrhoids, pain, elevated blood pressure, urinary incontinence, headaches/migraines, and constipation. It is also an excellent way to prepare the mother and baby for labor and can be used to correct breech position (up to 34 weeks).

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person. Most health conditions take more than one treatment to be resolved. It depends on many factors including duration and severity of the complaint. For example, if your condition is acute, 2-5 treatments may completely resolve symptoms, however, if you have been dealing with your symptoms for many years addressing them effectively will take longer. As a guide, it takes one month of treatment for every year you have been experiencing your complaint or ailment. As your health improves, visits can be reduced.

Is Acupuncture Covered By OHIP?

OHIP does not cover acupuncture; however many extended health insurance benefits do cover acupuncture treatments. Contact your insurance provider to obtain details on the extent and conditions of coverage.

Many of us hypnotize ourselves daily with negative thoughts and feelings. If you have a busy mind and find meditation challenging, discover the ease of hypnosis. Acupuncture, yoga, watching TV or a movie, repetitive exercise, meditation, and prayer are all forms of light hypnotic activities.

Hypnosis is more than just a state of deep relaxation. It is a natural state of selective, focused attention that opens the door to countless possibilities for healing, self-exploration, and change. Hypnotists call this state ‘trance.’ In this state, your inner mind is more receptive to suggestion. However, you are still fully aware, in control, and in-tune with your surroundings. At ALIVE, we have seen this natural holistic approach provide tremendous relief.

What Is Hypnosis Effective For?
Hypnosis works with the mind, body, and soul as an integrated unit. It has been used to resolve pain, reframe emotional issues (i.e. sad into optimistic or anxious into peaceful), reduce stress and approach medical procedures with greater calm and confidence. Some of the most common symptoms and conditions that hypnosis can help address are:

Stress reduction
Pain management
Fears (i.e. hospitals, needles, etc)
Pre-and post-operative preparation
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Hot flashes
Childbirth preparation
Fertility
Sleep issues

What Conditions Are Not Suitable?

A letter from a Medical Doctor is required for pain management.

Hypnosis for anyone with DID (dissociative identity disorder), schizophrenia or significant mental health issues can be helpful, but these individuals need to be under the care of a Mental Health Professional trained in hypnosis.

Hypnosis & Fertility
Hypnosis is an extremely effective way to overcome fertility concerns. It can reduce stress, fear, anxiety, and ‘re-program’ unhealthy habits in order to more easily conceive a child. For those on the fertility journey, hypnosis has been shown to significantly increase fertility: one study showed a jump in pregnancies from 30.2 percent to 53.1 percent.

What to Expect During the First Appointment?
A typical session will begin with you letting our specialist know a little about yourself, your goals, and objective. Our staff Hypnotist will walk you through the session and welcome you to make yourself comfortable. Following this, she will guide you into a focused state of calm and relaxation and utilize safe and gentle hypnotic strategies to reinforce positive thoughts at the unconscious level. Once in hypnosis, you will be completely in control and aware of your surroundings. After the appointment, you will feel more relaxed, balanced, and confident.
