Social Worker

Holistic health means treating not just the body but also the mind. Amallie has experience working with both individuals and couples facing a variety of challenges: anxiety and depression, women’s health, relationship issues, PTSD and many others. She offers practical and solution-focused programs to help you overcome life’s challenges and supports you throughout.

Amallie De Fonseka is a licensed Masters Social Worker with over seventeen years of experience in a variety of counselling roles. She is a Toronto native and graduate of the University of Toronto with a Masters in Social Work degree, and a Bachelors of Social Work degree from the University of Windsor. She also holds a Bachelors of Arts with Honours degree from Queens University. She is licensed with the Ontario College of Social Workers, and Social Service Workers in the State of Michigan, and she remains a member in good standing with both licensing bodies.

Amallie is passionate about working with the OTC community and has vast experience treating families and couples and troubled individuals. She once worked in the ICU and Emergency units (including during the Covid-19 outbreak), working in outpatient, and substance treatment facilities, and in refugee and domestic violence shelters, and in inpatient hospital settings while supporting clients struggling to rebuild their lives. She deals with clients who have court mandated therapy, often because of their substance abuse issues/ anger management.

Amallie also has experience helping people overcome anxiety, depression, anger management, relationship issues, grief, women’s health issues, family systems issues, divorce, academic difficulties, intergenerational conflicts and PTSD.

Amallie has a passion for healing relationships with couples therapy. She has logged many hours of professional development in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Gottman Marital Approach, Family Systems Therapy, Harm Reduction, Solutions Focused Therapy, Empowerment Model, Psychodynamic Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

Amallie has experience working with different ethnic populations and believes it’s important to understand the world from each client’s unique point of view. She tries to understand the complexities that life brings to immigrants and visible minorities. By fostering a supportive therapeutic alliance, clients feel more comfortable discussing their struggles and successes in a supportive environment.

Amallie believes in helping clients by walking with them, in their shoes and on their paths as they seek resolutions. David Liang graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in physiology. He then went on to study acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine and massage at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California. He earned his Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine in the year 2000. David has honed a practice that integrates several different modalities including the use of Restorative Yoga positions.

With this, he has found improved success in treating such conditions as women’s health concerns, fertility, chronic pain, and digestive issues while concurrently addressing posture imbalances.

David has continued to expand his breadth of acupuncture techniques and employs the particularly gentle Japanese-style.

David is a regular practitioner of meditation and was a teacher at Friends of the Heart meditation centre. He believes strongly in the positive effects of mindfulness on the body, emotions and in stress reduction. He is open to discussing specific techniques with those who are interested.

As a childbirth educator (1986-present) Shawn created & teaches the ChildbirthJoy Prenatal Hypnosis program. She is a published author in the doula series, Bearing Witness & Joyful Birth.

One of Shawn’s talents is to help you feel better by the time your appointment completes.

Setting a goal at the start of your appointment helps to focus the work; a wide range of modalities (hypnosis, tapping/EFT, NLP, mBIT Coaching, Matrix Reimprinting) can be employed so that you are in a calmer and more confident state.

Shawn also provides resources for you to learn self-hypnosis as well as complimentary mp3 recordings that you can go to sleep to.

Once a month, the free Relaxation Evening: Fertility Focus is offered at ALIVE Holistic Health.

Kim practices acupuncture and is expertly trained to improve fertility using Chinese herbal formulas; however, he also treats a wide range of ailments. He is a Member of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario. Kim holds an Honours Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Toronto.

In 2002, he studied at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine for three years before he travelled to China to pursue further training. He completed a 5-year program in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and received his Bachelors of Medicine Degree from the prestigious Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.

Kim then had the honour of apprenticing with Dr. Fu Zhen Long, a well renowned TCM physician who specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology with over 50 years of experience. His six year journey in China gives him a special perspective on TCM, and on a personal level, the importance of family.

He now lives in Toronto close to his family, and when he is not in practice, he enjoys reading, hiking, and teaching his nephew Chinese. He is open to discussing your health concerns and to inspire hope and healing.
